What this study means for families

Researchers created a new questionnaire called SIDAS-M to help identify when autistic adults might be thinking about suicide. They worked with autistic people to modify an existing tool because autistic people may understand questions differently. Early results suggest this new tool could be helpful for screening autistic adults (without intellectual disability) for thoughts of suicide, which is important since autistic people may be at higher risk.

Research summary

This study developed and preliminarily validated the Suicidal Ideation Attributes Scale-Modified (SIDAS-M), a screening tool specifically designed for autistic adults. Recognizing that autistic people may interpret questions differently than neurotypical individuals and may be at higher risk of suicidal behavior, researchers modified the existing SIDAS instrument through a collaborative process involving autistic people. The SIDAS-M showed promise as a useful screening tool for identifying suicidal ideation in autistic adults without intellectual disability. This represents an important step toward developing autism-specific mental health assessment tools that account for the unique communication and cognitive patterns of autistic individuals.

Key findings

  • 1

SIDAS-M showed potential utility for screening suicidal ideation in autistic adults without intellectual disability

Confidence: limitedRelevance: Provides autism-specific tool for suicide risk assessment
  • 2

Autistic people were involved in the collaborative modification process of the original SIDAS instrument

Confidence: strongRelevance: Ensures cultural validity and appropriateness for autistic population

Clinical implications

The SIDAS-M provides clinicians with an autism-specific tool for assessing suicide risk, potentially improving identification of at-risk autistic adults. However, further validation studies are needed before widespread clinical implementation. The tool appears limited to autistic adults without intellectual disability.

Limitations

The study reports preliminary validation only. Sample size and detailed methodology are not reported in the abstract. The tool was only validated for autistic adults without intellectual disability, limiting generalizability to the broader autistic population.

Original abstract

Autistic people may be at higher risk of suicidal behavior than people in the general population. Suicidal behavior may include thinking about suicide or attempting to end one's own life by suicide. It is important to identify autistic people who may be thinking about suicide. People who are at risk of suicidal behavior can be identified by asking questions about whether they have been thinking about suicide.

A specially designed questionnaire, or screening instrument, can help someone ask the best questions to find out if someone has been thinking about suicide. This information can help to identify supports to be put in place to prevent suicidal behavior, such as a suicide attempt. However, autistic people may interpret questions differently than non-autistic people. It is important to use screening tools that have been designed with, and for autistic people.

In this study, we examined the Suicidal Ideation Attributes Scale (SIDAS). The SIDAS is an existing tool that was developed to screen for suicidal thinking in the general population. We modified SIDAS for use with autistic adults. We involved autistic people in the process of modifying SIDAS.

We called the modified instrument the SIDAS-M. The results of our study showed SIDAS-M may be useful for screening for suicidal thinking in autistic adults who do not have an intellectual disability.
