What this study means for families
This study looked at how families cope during the time when their young child is being diagnosed with autism or intellectual disability. Researchers found that family well-being depends on what services they receive, how challenging their child's behavior is, how stressed parents feel, and family circumstances. The findings suggest families need better mental health support for parents, help managing difficult behaviors, and services that focus on the whole family's needs during this stressful time.

Research summary
This 2023 study examined family quality of life (FQOL) during the diagnostic evaluation period for autism or intellectual disability in young children. Researchers analyzed FQOL in relation to service types, children's clinical profiles, and family variables in families with recently diagnosed children. Key findings showed that FQOL was associated with types of services received, children's challenging behaviors, parenting stress, and various family composition and status factors. The results emphasize the critical need for comprehensive family support during the diagnostic period, including mental health support for parents, behavioral coaching interventions, and family-centered approaches to care.

Clinical implications
Results support implementing comprehensive family support during diagnostic evaluation, including parent mental health services, behavioral intervention coaching, and family-centered care models. Early intervention during the diagnostic period may prevent family adjustment difficulties and improve long-term outcomes for both children and families.

Limitations
The abstract does not specify sample size, study methodology, or demographic details. The specific measures used for family quality of life assessment are not described, and the nature of the relationships between variables (correlational vs. causal) is unclear from the available information.

Original abstract
During the diagnostic evaluation period for autism or intellectual disability (ID), families of young children are at risk for poor adjustment. The present study aimed to document family quality of life (FQOL), along with associated risk and protective factors, during this critical step of families' services trajectory. FQOL was measured in a large sample of families of children recently diagnosed with a neurodevelopmental disorder and examined in relation to the type of services received, children's clinical profile, and family variables. FQOL was related to types of services, children's challenging behavior, parenting stress, and several aspects of family composition and status.
These findings highlight a need for mental health support for parents, coaching interventions for challenging behaviors, and family-centered supports.
